Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Our solar battery went in six months ago, and the biggest surprise has been how much quieter our electricity routine feels. Before installation, I watched the meter spin every evening when cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and charging two bikes. Now the battery stores excess rooftop solar during the afternoon and runs those loads after sunset.
The installer recommended a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate home battery. I spent a weekend comparing the solar panel battery price, installation quotes, warranties, and usable capacity rather than choosing the cheapest listing. My installed cost was roughly $11,000 before the incentive. That felt painful, but I wanted backup power as well as savings.
The clearest difference appears on weekdays. Our utility uses time-of-use rates, with the expensive window from 4:00 to 9 p.m. The battery is usually full by lunch, so it carries the refrigerator, office, lights, and dinner appliances through the peak period. Our evening consumption used to add about $1.20 per day; now it is often under $0.30. Across a month, that has saved me approximately $27 to $35, depending on cloudy weather.
I did have one troubleshooting moment during a storm. The battery stopped discharging at 18%, although the app showed plenty of charge. I assumed the inverter had failed, but the support team explained that reserve mode had been triggered by a grid outage. I raised the reserve setting from 15% to 20%, and it worked normally after the grid returned. I appreciated that the system protected its backup margin instead of draining itself completely.
My bill is not zero, because we still pay connection charges and buy power in winter. Still, the battery storage has made our solar investment feel useful. I check the app less often now; seeing a charge cycle and peak usage decline is enough reassurance.
