I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. Before the battery, our solar panels exported most of their best production during the afternoon, then we pulled power from the grid when cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and charging two laptops.
Now, I charge the lifepo4 bank from late-morning solar and let it cover the house after sunset. On sunny days, the battery reaches full charge by about 2:30 p.m., and our inverter carries us through the evening without grid power. The biggest change shows up on the utility bill: last summer we averaged about $145 monthly, while the first three bills after installation averaged $82. That is roughly $63 saved each month, though winter savings are smaller because cloudy days and shorter daylight.
My one genuinely annoying moment came during a storm when the battery stopped discharging at 7:40 p.m. The monitoring app showed an error about low temperature, even though the garage felt comfortable. I checked the cable connections, restarted the inverter, and discovered the battery heater setting had been disabled in the commissioning menu. After enabling it, the system resumed normally the next evening. It was a small reminder that a solar battery is not completely set-and-forget equipment.
I also appreciate seeing real-time energy flow rather than guessing. The app tells me how much solar is going into storage and how much the house is using, so I changed laundry and water heating to late morning when possible. I have not added another battery yet; the current capacity covers our normal routine, and adding panels would probably make more sense first. For me, the best part is not energy independence, but fewer peak-hour purchases and a bill I can understand. The lifepo4 bank does its job.
