Only after our summer with a home battery did I realize how much of our electric bill came from a few expensive evening hours. My utility uses time-of-use pricing, so I programmed the solar energy storage system to charge from rooftop panels during the day and run the house from stored power after dinner.

The difference was immediate. Before installing it, our air conditioner, induction cooker, and water heater often pushed us into the highest rate period between 4 and 9 p.m. In July, our bill was usually around $210. This year, with similar weather, it was $118. That is not a perfect monthly saving because sunlight and utility rates vary, but the battery has become the part of our setup. On sunny days, we finish dinner, run the dishwasher, and have plenty of battery capacity left before bedtime. I like seeing the app show solar power flowing to the house instead of buying grid electricity.

Our system is also solar backup for home use, although I did not buy it for outages. During a blackout, the battery switched over in seconds and kept the refrigerator, internet equipment, lights, and a fan running. I had to turn off the clothes dryer manually, since heavy loads drain the battery, but everything stayed on for seven hours.

The only annoyance has been app confusion. Once, it reported that the battery was offline even though power was flowing normally. Restarting the gateway fixed it, and customer support confirmed the system was fine. I now trust the energy meter more than the notification.

For me, the best solar battery benefit is not independence from the grid. It is avoiding peak rates every evening, while keeping emergency power available. I barely think about the battery now, which is a sign that the installation was worthwhile.
