My setup is a 10-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate battery paired with a hybrid inverter and energy monitoring app. I had an electrician install a new backup subpanel, and the work took most of a day. The part that surprised me was how much time went into programming the battery schedule. We set it to charge from solar during daylight and discharge during my utility's peak period, generally from 4:30pm to 9pm. I also chose a conservative reserve so there would still be power during an outage.

The savings became obvious in the first full month. Before the battery, my evening consumption regularly pushed me into the highest rate tier. After installation, my grid usage during those hours nearly disappeared. My monthly bill dropped by about $68, although the exact amount changes with weather and our air conditioner use. I especially notice the difference on hot evenings: the battery runs the refrigerator, lights, router, and much of the kitchen load without me thinking about it. That feels more useful than watching a dashboard number rise.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. In July, the app showed the battery at 100%, but it would not discharge when peak pricing began. I discovered the inverter had switched into backup-only mode after a brief utility flicker. A full restart fixed it, and I changed the settings so that mode would be easier to recognize. I have not needed support since then, though I keep the manual nearby.
