Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Watching our electricity meter spin backward on sunny afternoons was satisfying, but the real test came after I added a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery to my rooftop solar system last spring. Before storage, my panels exported most of their excess power at a low credit, then I bought electricity back during the expensive evening hours. The battery changed that routine.
Installation was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in my garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and set a 20% reserve so we would have backup power. I watched the app for the first week. On clear days, solar charging usually finished by early afternoon, and the battery carried our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and evening cooking until bedtime.
The biggest practical win is peak-hour bill savings. I shifted dishwasher and laundry into daylight when possible, but we still use the battery automatically from about 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. In the first full month, our grid consumption dropped from 612 kWh to 238 kWh. Our bill fell from $184 to $83 despite similar weather and habits. After the time-of-use charges and fixed fees, savings were closer to $101, not the eye-catching $101, but still worthwhile.
One evening the monitoring app showed the battery at 0% even though the sun had been strong. I found the inverter had switched to backup mode after a brief outage and never resumed normal operation. Cycling the breaker and restarting the inverter fixed it, although I called the installer to confirm everything was safe. They updated firmware and changed the outage setting.
I have not seen that fault again. I also learned what not to panic about: a cold morning can temporarily reduce battery output, while a genuinely swollen lifepo4 battery would be a serious safety issue, not a normal performance quirk.
