Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Every evening, I used to watch our electricity meter climb once the sun went down. Our grid plan charged more from 4–9pm, so I installed a 10kWh home battery beside the inverter last spring. I chose sentry lithium batteries after comparing cycle life, safety, and warranty terms. The electrician spent extra time setting the battery charge schedule around our utility rates.
During sunny days, our rooftop solar panels fill the battery before lunch. By dinner, we are usually running on stored energy instead of buying peak-rate power. I schedule the dishwasher, washing machine, and heat-pump water heater for evening, while the battery handles lights, refrigerator, and internet equipment automatically. On an average weekday, I see roughly 6–8 kWh imported during peak hours, down from about 14 before storage. That difference shows up as roughly $2 to $3 saved per day, or about $60 monthly.
The feature has been the app, which shows solar production, battery state of charge, and grid import. One humid morning, the battery stopped charging at 62% even though the panels were producing. I found a warning about high temperature, so I checked the ventilation gap and discovered a cardboard box stored too close to the unit. After moving it, I power-cycled the controller as the manual suggested. Charging resumed within ten minutes, and the temperature stayed normal afterward. It taught me that battery storage needs basic housekeeping, even though the system is mostly automatic.
I have not eliminated my electric bill; cloudy stretches require grid power, and winter production is lower. Still, the solar battery has made peak usage calmer and more predictable. I like seeing the panels do useful work after sunset instead of exporting every kilowatt-hour. For my home, the biggest benefit is charging cheaply and using stored energy when rates are highest.
