Every evening, my house switches from the solar panels to the battery around sunset, and that simple change has made the biggest difference to my electricity bill. I installed a 10 kWh lithium battery last spring, mainly to avoid buying power during our utility’s expensive peak period from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The setup was less intimidating than I expected. My installer connected the hybrid inverter, battery management system, and energy meter, then checked the deye rs485 communication cable before commissioning everything. That cable detail mattered: the first evening, the inverter showed the battery at 100%, but the monitoring app displayed no battery data. We discovered the RS485 plug was not fully seated. After pushing it in and restarting the inverter, the state of charge appeared correctly. It has been boringly reliable since, which is exactly what I want from home energy storage.
On a typical sunny day, my panels fill the battery by early afternoon. Once the sun goes down, the battery runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, washing machine, and sometimes the heat pump. I set the battery reserve to 20%, so it does not drain completely overnight. During cloudy stretches, it may reach the reserve before morning, but the grid only supplies the final few hours.
Before installing the battery, my evening electricity use cost roughly $3 to $5 daily during the warmer months. Now that energy mostly comes from stored solar power. My monthly bill has dropped by about $70 on average, although winter savings are smaller because the panels produce less and the heat pump works harder.
The best part is not watching the app; it is realizing I can cook dinner and run laundry without thinking about peak rates. The battery has not eliminated my bill, but it has made the system useful after sunset.
