After six months with my home solar battery, the biggest change has been how little I think about electricity bills. Before installing storage, my solar panels produced plenty during the afternoon, but I still paid noticeably more whenever we cooked, did laundry, or ran the heat pump in the evening. Now the battery stores that excess solar energy and carries us through most of the expensive peak-rate period.
My system uses a 10 kWh lithium battery with a samlex inverter, and I usually set it to charge from solar only. On a sunny day, the battery reaches full charge by mid-afternoon. Once the panels stop producing, it starts covering the refrigerator, lights, internet equipment, and our evening cooking. We still draw a little grid power on cloudy days, but our peak-hour consumption has dropped dramatically. My monthly bill went from roughly $180 in summer to about $70, although the exact savings depend on weather and how much air conditioning we use.
The most useful practical feature has been checking the battery monitor before starting large appliances. I now run the dishwasher and washing machine around lunchtime, when solar production is high, instead of after dinner. That small habit seems to help the solar battery stay available later, when electricity costs more.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment during the first month. The battery stopped discharging overnight, even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I found that a backup reserve setting had accidentally been raised to 80 percent during a firmware update. Lowering it to 25 percent fixed the issue immediately. Since then, I have left enough reserve for outages but allowed the battery to do its main job.
It has not eliminated my electric bill, and winter will be a tougher test, but the combination of solar panels, battery storage, and sensible usage has made our energy costs far more predictable. That predictability is what I appreciate most.
