Every evening I used to watch my electricity meter climb after the sun went down. Our utility’s peak hours run from 4 to 9 p.m., and that was when our house started pulling from the grid. Since adding a rentech lithium battery to my rooftop solar system, that routine has changed.
I set the battery to charge from excess solar during the afternoon and discharge during peak hours. On a typical sunny day, the solar panels fill it by late afternoon. When the oven, heat pump, and lights come on together, the battery carries most of that load. I can see the change on the monitoring app: grid import falls to nothing until the battery reaches its reserve.
The savings are noticeable than I expected. Before installation, our monthly bill averaged around $180 in summer. After adding storage, the months have landed between $75 and $95, depending on cloudy weather and air-conditioning use. That is not a perfect zero-dollar bill, but shifting solar energy into expensive evening hours makes the battery feel worthwhile. I like having backup power for the refrigerator, internet, and a few lights when the grid goes down.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at the scheduled time. The app showed “waiting for grid conditions,” even though the grid was fine. I restarted the inverter and checked the time-of-use schedule; the update had reset my discharge window. Once I restored it, everything worked. That experience taught me to check settings after software updates instead of assuming the solar battery had failed.
My battery is not magic: cloudy stretches still require grid power, and I adjust the backup reserve before a storm. Still, watching solar power cover nighttime usage has become one of the satisfying parts of owning energy storage.
