Solution Solar Inverter
Nearly a year ago, I added a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My installer paired it with a hybrid inverter; I still call the whole unit my inversor, because that’s what the app labels it. I settled on a 20% backup reserve, so there’s enough stored energy for outages without sacrificing too much daily savings.
What surprised me was how quickly I started checking the state of charge. On sunny days, the panels usually fill the battery by early afternoon. Then, instead of exporting everything, the battery runs my refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and heat pump after sunset. During peak hours, it often covers nearly all of my load. My utility bill has fallen from roughly $180 per month in summer to around $75, although weather and rates vary. That’s a bigger difference than I expected, and I notice it most on cloudy evenings when I would previously have pulled power from the grid.
The system has not been perfect. One morning the battery showed 0% available even though the app said it had charged overnight. I checked the breaker, restarted the monitoring gateway, and waited. It recovered after about ten minutes, but I contacted the installer anyway. They found a software update had paused charging when backup mode was enabled. Since updating the firmware, it has behaved normally.
The battery sits in my garage, and unlike a generator, it doesn’t announce itself every time the grid flickers. During one outage, it switched over fast enough that my router never dropped. I’m not claiming it has paid for itself yet, but the combination of solar self-consumption, peak-hour bill savings, and backup power makes the storage battery feel worthwhile. Would I buy one again? Yes, but I would spend more time comparing inverter settings and asking about firmware support before installation.
