I installed a 10-kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my inverter last spring, mostly because my evening electricity use was eating into the savings from our rooftop solar. During sunny afternoons, the panels now charge the battery instead of sending every spare kilowatt-hour back to the grid for a small credit.
The difference showed up on my first full bill. I used to run the heat pump, dishwasher, and induction cooker between 5 and 9 p.m., when rates were highest. Now I switch those loads to battery power automatically. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $145 to $78, although weather and utility charges vary. That $67 reduction is more noticeable than the app graphs, because it pays back every month.
I paid attention to the lifepo4 c rating while comparing storage options. I am not running a workshop, but I wanted enough continuous output for normal loads without stressing the inverter. My battery has a 1C rating, and it handles the microwave, coffee maker, and refrigerator starting cycles without drama. I keep the reserve at 20%, so there is still backup power during an outage.
My only hiccup happened in July. The battery stopped discharging at sunset, even though the monitoring app showed plenty of charge. I found that the inverter had lost its Wi-Fi connection after a router update. I rebooted the router and inverter, then restored the connection in about ten minutes. I now check the physical status lights before blaming the solar battery.
Evenings at home are quieter. Instead of hearing the grid-tied system do nothing after sunset, I can see stored solar energy covering the house steadily. The battery management system has kept temperatures reasonable, and I have not noticed any performance loss so far. The value is simple: use solar power when it is expensive, and save the cheaper daytime energy for later.
