I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity after sunset. My rooftop solar already covered most daytime use, but our evening cooking, laundry, and heat-pump demand kept pushing the utility bill upward. The battery changed that pattern immediately: solar energy now charges it until afternoon, and I use stored power during the peak-rate window.
On sunny days, it usually carries the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and kitchen appliances from about 5 p.m. until bedtime. That is the highlight for me: I can see the battery state of charge dropping instead of watching the meter spin at full price. My monthly bill fell by roughly 30 percent, although the exact saving depends on weather and how often we run the dryer.
Installation was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the inverter, connected the battery with a proper fuse and isolator, and programmed the time-of-use schedule. That last setting mattered more than I realized: I set charging to begin only when solar production is available, rather than automatically pulling power from the grid.
I also keep a small backup setup for experimenting, including a lifepo4 12v 6ah battery, but it is not the main home storage bank. That little unit taught me to label cables clearly, because my first connection produced no output and I initially blamed the solar panel. The problem was simply a loose terminal; tightening it restored charging, and the battery monitor immediately showed a steady current.
Since then, I check the battery monitor once each evening, keep the enclosure dry and ventilated, and avoid letting the lithium battery sit at either extreme for long. For my household, the practical win is quiet, predictable backup power and a noticeably smaller bill, not flashy specifications or complicated automation systems.
