2 years ago, I installed a small solar battery system after getting tired of watching my evening electricity use push the bill up. The main reason was simple: I wanted to use more of my rooftop solar power after sunset instead of sending it back to the grid for very little credit.
My setup is fairly modest. I have six panels, a hybrid inverter, and a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate storage battery. I initially searched for a 12v lifepo4 battery kit, but decided a higher-voltage home battery would be cleaner for my existing equipment. Installation took most of one day. The electrician mounted the battery in the garage, ran new conduit, and set the inverter to charge from excess solar first.
The biggest difference appears between 4 and 9 p.m. Before storage, my household regularly pulled power during those peak hours, especially when cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and charging devices. Now the battery takes over automatically. On sunny days, it usually reaches full charge by early afternoon. I have seen my evening grid consumption drop by roughly 7kWh, which saves around $2 to $3 per day at my utility rates. That sounds small, but over a month it has made a noticeable dent.
The practical surprise was how quiet and boring the system is. I expected to monitor it constantly, but the solar monitoring app mostly confirms what I already feel on the bill. One evening, the battery stopped discharging at 31%. The app showed a temperature warning because I had closed the garage door during a cold snap. I opened it for ventilation, and the system resumed after about ten minutes. Since then, I keep the area clear and check the battery temperature during unusually cold nights.
For me, the value is not total energy independence. It is predictable savings, better use of my solar power, and less dependence on expensive evening electricity.
