Early last summer, I installed a 10-kWh solar battery beside my inverter, and the biggest surprise was how quickly it changed our evenings.
Before the storage system, our rooftop panels sent excess power back to the grid during the day, then we bought electricity between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. Our utility's peak rate is nearly three times the daytime rate, so I programmed the rechargeable lifepo4 battery to charge from solar first and discharge after dinner.
That one setting has made the most noticeable difference on my bill. In the first month, our energy charge dropped from about $184 to $119, despite running the air conditioner on several hot nights. The battery usually reaches 100% by early afternoon, and by bedtime it still has enough capacity to cover the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and television. I am not trying to live completely off-grid; I mainly want to avoid expensive peak electricity.
I did have one scare during the second week. The inverter stopped discharging at 62%, even though the app showed normal solar production. I checked the settings and found a backup reserve accidentally set to 60%. I lowered it to 20%, restarted the system, and discharge resumed within a minute. Since then, I have left a 25% reserve so we have some emergency power during outages without wasting most of the battery's useful capacity.
What I appreciate most is the quiet, automatic operation. There is no fuel, no maintenance beyond checking the app and keeping the equipment area clear. The solar battery has also made me more deliberate about daytime usage: I run the dishwasher and laundry while the panels are producing. That combination, rather than storage alone, has trimmed our monthly bill consistently.
Would I buy another battery? Yes, but only if our household load grows.
