I installed a 10kWh home battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity after sunset. The system uses a LiFePO4 battery with a lifepo4 bms 100a, and the electrician finished the wiring in one afternoon. I chose a wall-mounted solar battery because our garage is tight, and the neat cabling mattered almost as much as the capacity.
During sunny days, my rooftop solar panels now run the refrigerator, heat-pump water heater, and washing machine while charging the battery. By about 4 p.m., I usually have 70 to 90 percent stored, so the battery carries us through dinner and most of the evening. Our utility's peak rate starts at 4 p.m., which makes this simple schedule surprisingly effective. I set the inverter to prioritize solar self-consumption, then battery discharge, with grid power last during peak hours.
Before installing it, our monthly bill averaged $180 during the warmer months. After two billing cycles, it was $92 and $97, despite similar air-conditioning use. I am not pretending the battery eliminates the bill; cloudy stretches and grid connection fees remain. Still, saving roughly $80 to $90 per month feels tangible, especially because the system is doing useful work while we sleep. The biggest difference is not watching the energy monitor obsessively anymore; I simply check the app once a week.
I did have one scare in August. The battery stopped discharging at 55 percent, even though the app showed solar production. I power-cycled the inverter, checked the battery breaker, and found that a firmware update had changed the reserve setting to 50 percent. Restoring the 20 percent backup reserve fixed it immediately.
Now I keep that reserve for outages and let the lithium battery handle normal evening loads. For me, that balance makes the solar-plus-storage investment feel practical and worthwhile.
