Solution Solar Inverter
Yesterday I checked my electricity app while cooking dinner and realized my pylontech battery has changed our routine. We installed a 10 kWh home battery last autumn alongside our rooftop solar panels, to avoid buying grid power during the evening peak.
The difference is most noticeable between 5 and 9 p.m. Before the battery, the oven, dishwasher, and heat pump could all be running after sunset, and I would watch the meter climb. Now, the inverter switches to battery discharge as soon as solar production fades. On a typical weekday, the battery covers those four hours. Our daily grid import has fallen from roughly 14 kWh to 5 or 6 kWh, depending on the weather. That has taken about €1.50 to €2 off daily bills, and more when electricity prices spike.
I was initially nervous about battery efficiency and usable capacity. The advertised 10 kWh is not the same as energy delivered to the house after reserve settings and inverter losses. In practice, I usually see around 8.5 to 9 kWh available, which has been enough for our evening load. I keep a small reserve for outages, although we have not needed it yet.
One minor annoyance appeared during the first month: the battery stopped discharging after a firmware update. The app showed it was connected, but the state of charge stayed fixed. Power-cycling the inverter and waiting ten minutes restored normal operation; I also adjusted the minimum state-of-charge setting from 20% to 15%. Since then, the system has been boring in the best possible way.
For me, the biggest win is not feeling rushed to use appliances while the sun is shining. Solar generation fills the battery, and the stored energy carries us through the expensive hours. The pylontech battery has made our solar system feel practical rather than merely impressive.
