Two years ago I added a 10kWh home battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly because our evening electricity use was getting expensive. The installation was straightforward. My installer mounted the lithium battery beside the inverter, connected the energy storage unit to my solar panels, and set the app to prioritize charging from midday surplus.
The biggest difference shows up between 4pm and 9pm. Before storage, I would come home, turn on the oven, induction cooktop, lights, and heat pump, then watch the meter climb. Now the battery supplies that load. On sunny days, I often reach dinner time with 70–80% charge remaining, and the battery carries us through the evening without pulling much from the grid. My bill fell from $180 to $105 during summer. It is not a saving every month; cloudy weeks and winter heating hurt. But peak-hour consumption is noticeably lower, which is what I wanted.
I chose a system using lto cells after reading about their long cycle life and safer thermal behavior. My battery management system has been boringly reliable, which I consider a compliment. Once, after a firmware update, the app showed the battery as disconnected even though the inverter was working. I shut down the system using the isolator, waited minutes, and restarted it. The connection returned, and I have not seen the glitch.
What I appreciate most is the routine. I rarely think about the battery now; I simply check its state of charge in the morning and let solar do the work. I am considering adding another module before summer, especially if our electricity rate rises. For anyone comparing solar batteries, I would look closely at usable capacity, the warranty, and how the system handles partial charging, not just the advertised storage size.
