Viewing my electricity meter spin backward during sunny afternoons has been the most satisfying part of adding battery storage to my rooftop solar system. Before the upgrade, I sent plenty of midday power to the grid and then bought it back at expensive evening rates. Now my LiFePO4 battery charges after breakfast and usually carries the house through dinner and bedtime.

My installer mounted it in the garage, checked the battery management system settings, and connected the monitoring app. The installation itself took most of a day. The biggest practical change is peak-hour usage. I program the battery to discharge from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m., so our oven, lights, television, and heat-pump water heater run mostly on stored solar energy. My utility bill dropped from roughly $185 per month to $112 over the first comparable billing period. Weather matters, of course: a string of cloudy days leaves less solar power for overnight backup, and I still draw from the grid occasionally.
One evening, the app showed the battery at 18 percent even though there had been plenty of sunshine. I found the inverter had switched to backup-only mode after a brief grid flicker. A manual reset restored normal operation, and the installer later adjusted the transfer settings. Since then, it has been uneventful.
I appreciate that the battery is quiet most of the time, and its state-of-charge display makes our energy habits easier to understand. But it has made solar self-consumption noticeably better and evening costs much less.
