Honestly, I installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery last spring after my evening power bills became painful. I had considered cheap lithium rv batteries, but chose a home-rated solar storage system for daily cycling and backup power.
The setup was surprisingly straightforward. The installer mounted the battery in my garage, connected it to a hybrid inverter, and set a 20% backup reserve. My existing rooftop solar panels charge it during daylight, and the battery runs the house after sunset. No major rewiring.
The biggest payoff is peak-hour bill savings. Before storage, I paid the highest utility rate while cooking dinner, running laundry, and using air conditioning between 4:00pm and 9:00pm. Now the battery automatically takes over around four, so I rarely buy expensive grid electricity then. My first full month dropped from $214 to $137.
Weather was mild, so I do not claim every dollar came from the battery. On hotter weeks, however, I save roughly $60 to $75, depending on the air conditioner. The monitoring app shows self-consumption rising from about 62% to over 90%, which feels genuinely useful.
I had one minor troubleshooting moment after a storm. The battery stopped discharging even though the panels were producing normally. The app showed a communication warning, so I checked the inverter breaker, waited five minutes, and restarted it. Everything returned online. Later I learned the Wi-Fi bridge had briefly lost connection. It was annoying, but harmless.
During outages, it has kept my refrigerator, router, lights, and sump pump running without interruption. I barely hear it working, unlike a generator. That quiet battery backup is probably my favorite practical benefit so far.
I would size future storage around actual evening use, not just panel capacity. For my home, 10-kWh was enough; more would sit idle often.
