Our old electricity meter used to make me nervous every evening, especially when the utility's peak rates started at 4pm. I installed a 10kWh solar battery with a sofar solar inverter last spring, and the biggest change has been how quietly it handles those expensive hours.

Before the battery, I usually switched off the heat pump and avoided cooking during peak pricing. Now, my rooftop solar charges the battery through the afternoon, and the system automatically carries the house after sunset. We still use the oven, dishwasher, Wi-Fi, and lights without thinking about a sudden bill jump. On cloudy days, it does not fill completely, but the battery reserve setting keeps enough energy for the refrigerator and evening essentials.

My first full bill after installation was $64 lower than the same month last year, although weather and usage were not identical. Over the next few months, my monthly savings settled around $50 to $70. That is not a dramatic number by itself, but it adds up, and I appreciate using more of my own solar power instead of selling it cheaply back to the grid.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the inverter showed a battery communication warning one morning. I power-cycled the battery according to the manual, checked the cable connections, and waited ten minutes. The warning cleared and it has not returned. I now check the monitoring app once or twice a week, mainly to confirm the state of charge before a forecasted storm.

What I like most is the predictability. The solar battery is not magic, and I still buy grid electricity in winter, but peak-hour consumption has fallen noticeably. The setup also gives me backup power during short outages, which was an unexpected bonus. For my house, the setup feels worthwhile.
