Solution Solar Battery
Overnight, my solar battery has changed how I use electricity more than I expected. I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to avoid buying power during the expensive evening hours. The setup was not completely painless, but it was manageable. My electrician mounted the battery on a concrete wall, connected the solar panels, and programmed the battery to discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when my utility’s rates are highest.
The first week, I kept checking the monitoring app like a nervous parent. On sunny days, the panels topped up the battery by early afternoon, and the battery carried our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and television through dinner. Before installing storage, we would pull heavily from the grid during those hours. Now, the app usually shows grid consumption close to zero until bedtime. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 to $105 over the summer, although I know weather and changing usage make that comparison imperfect. Still, the peak-hour savings are real: I’m saving around $60–$75 most months. That feels more useful than a flashy maximum capacity number.
One small troubleshooting moment made me appreciate the system more. During a cloudy spell, the battery reached its low reserve earlier than expected and switched to grid power. I initially thought the solar charge controller had failed, but the app showed our dishwasher and space heater had run together. I raised the backup reserve from 15% to 25% and moved laundry to midday. Since then, the battery has stayed dependable.
I also keep a small power inverter 1000w for camping and emergency charging, but it is separate from the main home battery system. For me, the biggest benefit is not total energy independence. It’s simply using my own solar power later, during peak pricing periods.
