0nly after living with rooftop solar panels for two summers did I realize how much electricity I was still buying after sunset. I added a 300 amp hour battery to my home energy storage system last spring, and the change showed up most clearly on my utility bill.
Before the battery, my solar production dropped to zero in the evening, just when cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and charging phones. The inverter would pull from the grid during those expensive peak hours. Now the battery charges through the afternoon and automatically carries the house from about 4:30pm until bedtime.
My monthly bill fell from roughly $145 to $68, although weather and habits vary. I do not pretend it eliminates every charge: the utility still adds connection fees, and cloudy weeks leave less energy to store. Still, the peak-hour savings are predictable enough that I notice them every month.
The most useful feature has been battery backup during outages. One windy evening, power flickered while I was working from home. The lights blinked, the inverter clicked, and then everything continued without me resetting anything. I later discovered the battery had entered backup mode, but my Wi-Fi router had not restarted correctly because it was plugged into a switched outlet. Moving it to a backed-up circuit solved the problem, though I now keep a lamp connected there so I can see the system status during an outage.
I also changed the reserve setting from 10% to 25%. Losing that extra capacity gives me more emergency runtime without noticeably reducing savings. For my household, the lesson is simple: battery capacity matters, but usable settings and an inverter matter just as much.
