I installed a small solar battery system last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the expensive evening hours. My setup uses six rooftop panels, a hybrid inverter, and a 5 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. I also have a balcony array with a microwechselrichter 1000, which feeds daytime power into the house and helps keep the battery charging.
The biggest difference has been the quiet, automatic shift after sunset. Before the battery, our cooking, laundry, and heat-pump use hit the grid between 5 and 9 p.m. Now the battery usually covers that window. On clear summer days, it reaches 100% by mid-afternoon, and I watch the energy monitor show household loads being supplied from stored solar instead of the utility. My monthly bill has dropped from roughly €115 to €68, although winter savings are much smaller because short cloudy days leave little energy to store. I am not pretending the battery eliminated the bill; standing charges and grid use still remain.
One evening, the battery stopped discharging at 42%. The app showed “standby,” even though the house was drawing power. I checked the inverter, found a communication warning, and restarted the battery controller using the manufacturer’s shutdown sequence. After ten minutes it resumed normally. I later tightened a loose network cable near the inverter. That incident taught me not to panic or repeatedly flip breakers when troubleshooting.
I particularly appreciate the reserve setting. I keep 25% capacity for outages, then allow the system to use the rest for peak-hour savings. During a neighborhood blackout, the essential-loads circuit kept our refrigerator, router, and few lights running.
After several months, my advice is simple: size the battery around your evening consumption, not your panel marketing numbers. Good monitoring, sensible battery settings, and an installer who explains the wiring matter as much as capacity.
