I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 home battery last spring after watching my evening electricity bills climb. My solar panels already produced plenty during the day, but I was sending most of that power back to the grid and buying it back after dinner. The battery changed that routine immediately.
On a normal sunny day, my inverter charges the battery by early afternoon. Around 4:30 p.m., the system switches from solar to stored energy, and it usually carries us through midnight. I cook, run the dishwasher, and occasionally use the clothes dryer without pulling from the grid during the expensive peak window. Before installation, my utility bill averaged about $190 in summer. Last summer, with similar air conditioning use, it averaged $112. That’s roughly $78 saved each month, although the exact number depends on weather and utility rates. Watching the battery state of charge climb at lunchtime and then slowly fall after sunset has become surprisingly satisfying.
My one hiccup happened during a firmware update. The app showed the battery at 100%, but the house started drawing grid power at 7:00 p.m. I first assumed something was broken. After checking the inverter, I found the backup reserve had been reset from 20% to 100%. That left no usable energy for normal cycling. Support answered my email the next morning, and changing the reserve back fixed it. Since then, I check the app after updates instead of blindly trusting it.
For anyone doing a lifepo4 battery comparison, I would focus less on headline capacity and more on usable capacity, round-trip efficiency, warranty terms, inverter compatibility, and whether local installers can provide help. A battery backup system is not hands-off, but mine has required less attention than I expected. The biggest win is simple: more of my own solar power now runs the house, and peak-hour electricity purchases have dropped noticeably.
