Eighteen months ago I added a mecer lithium battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly because our evening electricity use was painfully expensive.
Before the battery, my panels produced plenty during the day, but I still bought power from the grid between dinner and bedtime. That felt wasteful, especially in summer when the air conditioner ran after sunset.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in our garage, connected it to the inverter, and set a reserve level of 20 percent. I kept that setting because outages are uncommon here, but I still wanted backup power for the refrigerator and internet.
The biggest difference showed up on my utility bill. The battery charges from solar energy around midday and discharges during peak hours. My evening consumption is usually about 7 to 9 kilowatt-hours, and the battery now supplies most of that. My monthly bill fell from roughly $180 to $95, although weather and utility rates obviously vary. That is not a perfect month-to-month comparison, but the savings are clear when I check the monitoring app.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at the scheduled time. The app showed “standby,” even though the house was drawing power. I power-cycled the inverter and checked the operating mode. The schedule had reset to a default time zone. Correcting that fixed everything, and support confirmed the same issue by email. It was annoying, but not the scary battery failure I initially imagined.
What I appreciate most is how quietly it works. I do not micromanage charge cycles or watch the state of charge constantly. On sunny days, solar self-consumption rises, grid dependence falls, and this battery backup feels like a practical investment for our home over the long term.
