I installed a lifepo4 50ah battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. My solar array is modest, just 3.6 kW, and before adding storage I watched the system export power at lunchtime, then pulled everything from the grid after dinner. That felt wasteful.

I mounted the battery on a concrete wall, connected the battery cables and communication lead, and changed the inverter settings to charge from solar only. The app recognized the lithium battery. I set it to begin discharging at 4 p.m., when our utility’s higher rate starts, and to stop at 20 percent reserve.

On sunny days, the battery usually reaches full charge around noon. It then runs our refrigerator, router, lights, television, and sometimes the washing machine through the evening. We use roughly 4 to 5 kWh overnight, so this battery does not cover everything, but it handles the most expensive hours surprisingly well. Our monthly bill fell from about $145 to $82 over the first full summer month. Weather and air-conditioning habits mattered too, so I am not claiming the battery caused every dollar of savings, but the difference was obvious.

I did have one troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging after a firmware update, even though the app showed 78 percent charge. I found that the inverter had reverted to “backup only” mode. Switching it back to self-consumption fixed the problem, and the battery resumed output immediately.

After several months, I like the quiet operation and predictable peak-hour savings most. I am considering adding another unit before winter, not because the current solar battery is unreliable, but because having more usable capacity would let us run the heat pump longer without grid power. For my home, storage has been a practical bill-cutting tool rather than a gadget.
