Keeping my solar battery charged after breakfast has changed the way I think about our electricity bill. I installed a 10kWh home energy storage battery last spring, mainly to avoid buying expensive grid power in the evening. My setup includes rooftop solar, an 8kw inverter, and a simple app that shows battery levels and household consumption.
Before the battery, our biggest usage started around 5 p.m. The oven, heat pump, lights, and television would all come on just as the utility rate increased. Now the battery usually reaches full charge by early afternoon, then carries the house through the peak period. On sunny weekdays, we use very little grid electricity between dinner and bedtime. Our monthly bill has fallen from roughly $180 to between $85 and $110, depending on the weather and heating demand.
The savings are most noticeable during cloudy weeks. The battery does not create energy, of course, so several dull days can leave it partly charged. Still, having stored solar power available means we are not automatically paying peak rates every evening. I also changed the battery’s reserve setting from 20% to 15%, which gave us a little more usable capacity without making me uncomfortable about backup power.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. One morning, the monitoring app showed the battery as offline even though the inverter lights looked normal. I restarted the home Wi-Fi connection first, but that did not help. Power-cycling the battery communication module restored the connection within a few minutes. The battery had continued operating; only the app reporting had stopped.
That experience made me appreciate the system’s quiet, automatic operation. I rarely touch it now. I check the charge level before unusually hot or stormy days, but otherwise the solar battery simply charges, discharges, and trims our evening electricity use in the background.
