I installed my lithium powerwall battery in my garage last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. My rooftop solar system is modest, only 5.4 kW, and before the battery I watched it export power during the afternoon, then paid the highest rate after dinner. That felt wasteful. The battery has changed the rhythm of our house more than I expected.
On sunny days it fills by early afternoon and carries us through cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and watching television. At 6:30 p.m., the app usually shows battery discharge rather than grid use, which is satisfying in a very practical way. Our utility uses time-of-use pricing, so those few evening hours matter most. In the first full month, my bill dropped by about 38 percent compared with the same month last year. Weather was similar, and I did not change our habits much. The biggest difference was simply storing solar energy instead of selling it for a small credit.
The one minor problem happened during a cloudy week, when the battery stopped charging at 62 percent. The monitoring app displayed a communication warning, but the lights in the house stayed on. I power cycled the backup gateway and checked the cable connections before calling the installer. That fixed it within ten minutes, and it has not returned. I appreciated having a simple troubleshooting step instead of immediately arranging a service visit.
I also like the quiet backup reassurance. During an outage caused by a storm last month, we barely noticed. The refrigerator stayed running, the internet router remained online, and the battery switched back to solar charging when daylight returned. It is not a magical solution: winter production still needs grid support, but for peak-hour savings, solar battery performance has been worthwhile.
