8 months ago, I installed a 280 ah batterie beside my inverter. The main reason was simple: my evening electricity use kept pushing me into expensive peak hours, even though my rooftop solar produced plenty during the day.
Before storage, I sent surplus power back to the grid for a small credit, then bought power back after dinner. Now the solar battery charges from late-morning production and runs the refrigerator, router, lights, and sometimes the washing machine after sunset.
The difference showed up on my first full bill. My monthly usage was similar, but the peak-hour portion dropped by roughly 35%. That worked out to about $42 saved that month, although savings vary with cloudy weather and utility rates. I still use grid power overnight when the battery reaches its reserve, which I set at 20%.
The installation itself was easier than expected. My installer mounted the battery on a garage wall, added a dedicated breaker, and configured the hybrid inverter to prioritize solar charging. I watched the app for several days because I wanted to understand the battery state of charge instead of blindly trusting the advertised capacity.
One small troubleshooting moment happened during a storm. The app showed “standby” while the house was drawing from the grid. I checked the breaker, restarted the inverter, and discovered the system had temporarily disabled discharge because its temperature sensor had detected a cold garage. Once the room warmed, it resumed normally. I appreciated that protection feature, even though the notification was vague.
In daily use, I barely notice the battery. I check the charge level at breakfast and before bed. On sunny days, it carries us through most of the evening; on rainy days, I lower discretionary loads and let the grid help. My biggest benefit is predictable backup power.
