I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my solar inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity in the evening. My utility uses time-of-use pricing, so the difference between daytime and dinner-time rates is significant. Before the battery, our heat pump, induction stove, and water heater could push the house into the highest-priced period just when we came home.
The first week was more hands-on than I expected. The installer configured the battery to charge from excess solar and discharge from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. I watched the energy-monitoring app constantly, comparing solar generation, battery state of charge, and grid import. By the second week, I stopped checking every hour. On a sunny day, the panels fill the battery to 95 percent, and stored energy carries us through the evening. Our overnight grid use has fallen dramatically.
My bill savings are not dramatic every single month, because cloudy weather and winter heating still matter, but I am saving roughly $45 to $70 monthly during the brighter season. That feels worthwhile, especially because the battery also gives us backup power.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging during peak hours even though the app showed plenty of capacity. I eventually found that a firmware update had reset the operating schedule to “self-consumption” mode. After restoring the time-of-use settings and rebooting the inverter, everything worked normally. I now check the schedule after updates instead of blaming the solar panels.
