I installed a 10-kWh LiFePO4 battery system beside my inverter last spring, mainly because our evening electricity use was eating into the savings from our rooftop solar.
Before the battery, my panels exported plenty of power at lunchtime, but we bought it back during the expensive evening peak. The change was immediately noticeable on the monitoring app: my battery charged from solar until late afternoon, then carried the house through cooking, charging, and the heat pump after sunset. On ordinary days, I now avoid roughly 6–8 kWh of peak grid electricity.
That’s about 60–80 cents saved per day in my tariff, or roughly €20–€24 per month, depending on weather. During cloudy weeks, the battery still reduces the sharpest evening consumption, although I’m careful not to pretend it makes us energy independent.
The setup was easier than I expected. The installer mounted the storage unit, connected a battery management system, and configured a 20% reserve so we would have backup power during outages. The professional installation cost more upfront, but I valued tested protection and a clear warranty more than saving money on a risky home-built pack.
My only real hiccup came in winter when the app showed the battery stuck at 99% for hours. I checked the inverter screen and found the system had switched to standby because the temperature in the utility cupboard was too low. After moving the temperature sensor and restarting the controller, it resumed charging normally; no dramatic repair was needed. That small incident taught me to check alerts rather than panic.
The biggest practical benefit is quiet predictability: I wake up knowing the battery did its job overnight.
