I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phospate battery last spring, after getting tired of watching our electricity bill jump whenever the heat pump ran after sunset. The setup was less dramatic than I expected: the installer mounted the battery in our garage, connected it to the existing solar inverter, and finished testing in an afternoon. What took me longer was learning the app and its charge schedule.
Our utility charges steep time-of-use rates from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m., and that is where the storage has made the biggest difference. Before installation, I often used the grid for dinner, laundry, and air conditioning. Now the panels fill the battery during the day, while the house runs on stored solar through the expensive evening window. On a typical sunny weekday, the battery reaches 100 percent by about 2:00 p.m. and supplies roughly 6 to 8 kWh before midnight. This has reduced our monthly bill by around $70, although winter savings are closer to $25 because of shorter days and cloudy weather. I like that the app shows solar production, home consumption, and battery flow separately; I can finally see what is happening instead of guessing.
The only hiccup came during our first hot weekend. I noticed the battery stopped discharging at 6:00 p.m., even though the state of charge was 58%. I checked the app and found that a firmware update had reset the backup reserve from 15% to 60%. That setting was protecting too much capacity for an outage that never arrived. After lowering the reserve, normal discharge returned immediately. I appreciate having a reserve because short outages do happen here, but I wish the app had warned me clearly instead of making me troubleshoot it.
After six months, the battery performs reliably, and avoiding evening grid power remains its valuable benefit.
