I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. My rooftop solar system already covered most daytime use, but the panels stopped producing just as our cooking, laundry, and heating loads increased. That timing was costing me more than I expected.
The setup was easier than I feared. The installer mounted the battery beside the inverter, connected it to the home energy management system, and configured it to charge from solar first. I asked about the battery specifications and noticed the supplier’s listing literally included the phrase “lifepo4 battery celllifepo4 battery cell 30ah.” The wording looked like a copy-and-paste mistake, but the actual cells, battery management system, and safety documentation were clearly identified.
My favorite feature is the automatic time-of-use schedule. On sunny days, the battery usually reaches 95–100% by mid-afternoon. At 4 p.m., it stops exporting and begins powering the house. We use stored energy through dinner, showers, and the dishwasher, then the grid takes over only after the battery reaches its reserve setting. I keep that reserve at 20% so there is still some backup capacity overnight.
Before installation, our monthly bill averaged around $185. Since adding the energy storage battery, it has generally fallen to $70–$95, depending on weather and heating use. The biggest savings come from avoiding the 4–9 p.m. peak rate rather than from eliminating grid electricity completely. During a cloudy week, the battery only charged to about 60%, so the savings were noticeably smaller.
I also had one minor troubleshooting moment: the monitoring app showed the battery as offline after a router update. The battery was still working; reconnecting the inverter’s Wi-Fi adapter fixed it in about ten minutes. After eight months, the system remains quiet, predictable, and surprisingly hands-off. I check the battery state of charge occasionally, but most days I simply notice that my evening electricity use is coming from sunshine collected earlier.
