lithium iron oxide battery

I installed a lithium iron oxide battery beside my garage last spring, mainly to stop sending so much cheap midday solar power back to the grid. My rooftop solar panels already covered most daytime use, but our house became expensive after dinner, when the heat pump, induction cooker, and dishwasher were all running. The battery has made the biggest difference during those evening peak hours.

The setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery, connected it to a hybrid inverter, and configured the energy management app in one afternoon. I chose a 10 kWh solar battery with a usable capacity of roughly 9 kWh. On a sunny day, it usually charges by early afternoon, then starts discharging around 4 p.m. I set a small backup reserve so it does not drain completely before nighttime.

Before storage, my summer electricity bill averaged about $145 per month. After adding the battery, it dropped to around $85, although the exact savings depend on weather and utility rates. I am not saving money on every single day; cloudy weeks still mean buying grid electricity. However, avoiding several hours of peak-rate power has been surprisingly noticeable.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. During the first week, the battery stopped discharging even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I initially thought the system had failed, but the inverter had entered a temperature-protection mode during an unusually hot afternoon. The installer adjusted the ventilation clearance and updated the firmware. It has not repeated the problem.

What I appreciate most is the quiet, automatic operation. I rarely think about the battery now. I check the monitoring app a couple of times a week, mostly out of curiosity, and I like seeing our evening consumption supplied by stored solar energy instead of the grid. For my household, the solar battery is not a magic bill eliminator, but it has made our solar investment considerably more practical and predictable.
