Solution Solar Inverter
I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron battery beside my solar inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity in the evening. Before the battery, my solar panels produced plenty during the day, but our household used most power after work: cooking, laundry, air conditioning, and charging two phones and a laptop. The extra solar energy went back to the grid for a fairly small credit.
The first noticeable change came with my next bill. Our utility’s peak rate starts at 4 p.m., so I programmed the solar battery to charge from the panels during the afternoon and discharge from 4 p.m. until bedtime. On sunny days, the battery usually covered nearly all of our evening use. My monthly bill dropped from about $145 to $78, although that varies with weather and how much air conditioning we run. During one especially hot month, the saving was closer to $45 because the battery emptied before midnight.
What I like most is that the system works quietly in the background. The monitoring app shows solar production, battery storage, household demand, and whether we are importing electricity. I stopped obsessively checking it after the first few weeks, but it is useful when I want to understand a high bill.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging during a brief internet outage, even though the panels and inverter were still operating. After restarting the communications gateway, everything returned to normal. The installer later explained that the battery itself had not failed; the app connection had simply lost its settings.
This solar battery has not eliminated my electricity bill, and winter production is noticeably weaker. Still, shifting stored solar power into peak hours has made the biggest practical difference. For my home, the lithium iron battery feels less like a high-tech gadget and more like a simple way to use the solar energy I already generate.
