8 months ago, I added a 280ah lifepo4 basen battery to my home solar setup, mainly to stop sending so much cheap daytime power back to the grid and then buying electricity during expensive evening hours. I already had rooftop solar, but before the battery, my inverter would export power around lunchtime while the house pulled from the grid after dinner. That felt wasteful.
The installation itself was easier than I expected. My installer mounted the battery beside the inverter in the garage, connected it to the solar charge controller, and set a reserve level of 20%. I wanted enough backup capacity for short outages, but I also wanted the battery to cycle regularly. The app showed solar production, battery state of charge, household consumption, and grid import, which made the savings much easier to understand.
The biggest improvement has been peak-hour bill savings. On sunny days, the battery reaches full charge by mid-afternoon. Around 5 p.m., when cooking, lights, and the heat pump start pushing my usage higher, it supplies the house instead of the grid. Before adding energy storage, I regularly saw evening imports of 6–9 kWh. Now that figure is often below 1 kWh. My monthly electricity bill has dropped by roughly 35–45%, depending on weather and how much heating we use.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging overnight and stayed at 62%. I checked the operating mode and found that the backup reserve had somehow changed to 60%. I restored it to 20%, restarted the battery management system, and everything worked normally again.
After several months, the 280ah lifepo4 basen has been quiet, predictable, and practical. I like that solar energy storage now covers the expensive hours without requiring daily attention. It has not eliminated my bill, but it has made my solar investment noticeably more useful.
