lithium ion battery packs

I installed a home solar battery last spring, mostly because my electricity bills were getting ridiculous during the evening peak. My rooftop panels already covered much of our daytime use, but cooking, laundry, and air-conditioning after dinner pushed us into the expensive hours. Adding lithium ion battery packs gave that unused midday energy somewhere to go.

The installer mounted the battery on a garage wall beside the inverter, added a backup gateway. We settled on 25 percent, so the solar storage system keeps some power for an outage but still discharges enough each night to save money.

The first month was the real test. Before the battery, our utility bill averaged around $185. Afterward, it fell to $112, even though the weather was similar. That $73 difference is not life-changing, but it is consistent, and during hotter months the savings have been closer to $90. The battery usually starts charging around late morning, reaches full capacity by midafternoon, and then powers the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and heat pump after sunset. I like seeing the app show grid consumption drop almost to zero between 5 and 9 p.m.

My favorite feature is the automatic backup. We had a short outage during a storm, and the lights flickered once before the battery inverter took over. The refrigerator never stopped, and our internet came back within a minute. I did notice the system stopped discharging one evening when the app reported a communications error. Restarting the gateway fixed it, and support called the next morning to confirm everything was normal.

After several months, I am happy with the solar battery performance. It is quiet, requires almost no attention, and makes our solar panels more useful. The biggest benefit is not feeling helpless when peak rates hit; we use our own stored energy instead.
