lithium ferro phosphate battery

I installed my solar battery system last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. The heart of it is a 10 kWh lithium ferro phosphate battery, paired with 3.6 kW of rooftop solar. I chose that chemistry because I wanted something designed for regular cycling, not just an occasional backup unit.

The biggest difference showed up on sunny weekdays. By late afternoon, the battery is usually around 90 percent full. Once our utility’s peak rate starts at 4 p.m., the inverter switches our house over to stored energy. We run the refrigerator, lights, television, Wi-Fi, and sometimes the dishwasher without pulling much from the grid. Before installation, those evening hours were responsible for a surprisingly large part of our bill. My monthly electricity cost has dropped from roughly $180 to between $75 and $95, depending on the weather and how much air conditioning we use.

I did have one small troubleshooting moment. After a cloudy stretch, the battery reached its reserve setting earlier than expected, and I assumed something had failed. The monitoring app showed normal operation; the problem was simply that I had left the backup reserve at 30 percent. I lowered it to 20 percent for ordinary days and kept the higher setting only when storms were forecast. That adjustment made a noticeable difference without compromising emergency backup power.

What I appreciate most is how boring the system has become. There is no daily maintenance beyond checking the app occasionally. The solar battery quietly charges during daylight and carries the house through the expensive hours. It has not eliminated my electric bill, especially in winter, but peak-hour savings are real, and I feel less exposed to rate increases. If I expand later, it will be because our evening usage grows, not because the current battery has disappointed me.
