offdelay

Finally, after three months of watching my rooftop solar panels send excess power back to the grid, I installed a 10kWh solar battery in the garage. The main reason was simple: our electricity plan charges nearly twice as much during the 4–9 p.m. peak window.

The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside the inverter, added a backup gateway, and connected it to the existing solar array. I did spend an afternoon learning the monitoring app, especially the charge settings. I set it to prioritize solar charging and reserve 25% for outages. I also had to adjust the offdelay setting after noticing the battery switched to grid power a few minutes before the peak period ended. A small timing change made the evening routine much smoother.

The savings have been easiest to notice on hot weekdays. Before the battery, running the air conditioner and cooking dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. could add $4–$6. Now the battery covers most of that load using midday solar energy. My monthly bill dropped from around $145 to $98, though weather and utility rates vary. That is roughly $47/month, and I expect better savings in summer.

What I appreciate most is how quietly it works. I rarely think about the battery during the day; I just check the app occasionally and see the state of charge rising. During one brief outage, the transfer took a few seconds, and our refrigerator, router, and lights stayed on. It was reassuring, although I still avoid running the oven on backup power.

For my home, storage has not eliminated the bill, but it makes solar power useful.
