Home power used to feel strangely expensive after sunset. My rooftop solar panels made plenty during the day, but I was still buying electricity during the evening peak period. That changed when I added a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate home battery last spring.

The installation was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in the garage, beside the inverter, and connected it to selected circuits rather than the whole house. By lunchtime, the monitoring app showed solar generation flowing first to the house, then into storage.

My biggest win is the evening routine. Around 5 p.m., the battery starts covering cooking, lights, television, and my heat-pump water heater. On sunny days, it carries us until bedtime without grid power. In winter, when the panels charge less, it still reduces the most expensive hours.

Before storage, my monthly electricity bill averaged about $185. Since installing it, bills have landed between $70 and $95 during similar weather. The battery does not eliminate every charge because there are cloudy stretches and unavoidable grid fees, but peak-hour usage has fallen sharply.

I did not choose the cheapest home battery purely by sticker price. I compared usable capacity, warranty, round-trip efficiency, backup behavior, and whether the battery management system worked with my existing solar inverter. The slightly higher upfront cost made sense because I wanted dependable daily cycling, not a gadget that would sit idle.

There was one small scare in July. The app showed the battery at 100 percent, yet the house began pulling from the grid. I checked the settings and found a scheduled backup reserve had been raised to 80 percent after a software update. Lowering that reserve restored normal discharge within minutes.

For me, reliable evening power matters more than chasing the lowest price or maximum advertised capacity.
