8 months ago, I added a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity.
Before installation, my panels often exported power around noon and I still paid the highest utility rate after dinner. The installer mounted the battery in my garage and connected it through a hybrid inverter.
The setup was less disruptive than I expected. A technician finished the wiring in one afternoon, then spent another hour checking the monitoring app and backup settings. I chose a 20% reserve, so there is always some energy left during an outage. The only surprise was how quickly the battery filled on sunny days.
My biggest difference shows up between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. Instead of pulling from the grid when cooking, running the dishwasher, and charging phones, the house draws from stored solar energy. During the first full month, my evening grid use fell by roughly 70%. My bill dropped from about $142 to $68, even though our daytime habits barely changed.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. In November, the battery stopped discharging at 6:00 p.m., even though the app showed 62% capacity. I checked the obvious things first: no error lights, inverter online, and the circuit breaker was on. A firmware update had quietly changed the reserve setting to 60%. I lowered it back to 20%, restarted the inverter, and normal operation returned within a few minutes.
That experience made me appreciate having a clear app rather than guessing. I also learned not to confuse this system with a DIY 18650 battery pack: my installed storage uses certified LiFePO4 cells, thermal monitoring, and a proper battery management system. I would not trade those protections for a cheaper homemade option.
Dependable backup power matters more than chasing every possible dollar saved.
