I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the evening peak. My rooftop solar already covered most daytime use, but cooking, laundry, and the heat pump kicked in after sunset, exactly when my utility charged the highest rate.
The change was noticeable in the first full month. Before the battery, my summer bill averaged about $185. Afterward, it fell to $92, even though our air conditioner ran more than usual. The battery charged from solar between late morning and mid-afternoon, then discharged from 4 p.m. until bedtime. I still pulled some power from the grid overnight, but avoiding those expensive peak hours made the real difference. On cloudy days, the battery usually carried us through dinner and part of the evening, rather than trying to do everything.
I use the system’s app more than I expected. It shows solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption in real time. Seeing the battery drop when the oven and dryer ran together helped me change a few habits. I now run the dishwasher around noon, when solar power is available, and save battery capacity for the evening.
One small problem came during the first month: the battery stopped discharging after a software update. The installer had me restart the inverter and update the app, and it was working again within ten minutes. Since then, it has been boring in the best possible way.
I had originally searched for lithium batteries for off grid solar, even though my house remains grid-connected. The same lithium iron phosphate battery technology made sense for backup and daily load shifting. My solar battery has lowered bills, reduced grid dependence, and made our power use feel deliberate. The practical savings mattered more than chasing total energy independence for us.
