I installed a home solar battery last autumn, mainly because my evening electricity bills were getting ridiculous. The panels already covered most daytime use, but once the sun disappeared, we were buying expensive grid power for cooking, laundry, and heating water.
I chose a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, although I kept seeing searches for “lithium 12v” batteries while comparing smaller DIY systems. My installer handled the wall mounting and inverter connection in one long morning. The physical setup was less dramatic than I expected: battery beside the inverter, conduit neatly clipped, and the app configured before lunch. What mattered to me was not the shiny equipment but the automatic switchover. At 4 p.m., the battery starts taking over when solar production falls, and it usually carries the house until bedtime.
Before storage, our utility bill averaged about $180 per month during winter. After installation it dropped to roughly $105, despite similar weather and usage. That is not a miracle—the battery is simply charging from surplus solar at midday and discharging during the utility’s peak period, usually from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m.
On sunny days, I reach dinner time with 70% charge remaining, run the dishwasher, and still have enough left for the television and refrigerator overnight. The savings are clearest on cloudy weeks, when I can choose reserve mode before a high-rate evening instead of draining everything immediately. My monitoring app shows the battery providing around 6–8 kWh daily, though actual results depend on weather and how enthusiastically my family uses the oven.
One evening, the app showed communication warning. I checked the breaker, restarted the gateway, and the warning cleared after ten minutes. That hiccup reminded me solar storage is home equipment, not magic. I now check charge levels weekly and use reserve mode before storms.
