Solution Solar Battery
I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my inverter last spring, mostly to stop exporting cheap midday solar power and buying electricity during expensive evening hours. The setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery on a concrete pad, connected the communication cable, and walked me through the monitoring app. I did have to move my Wi-Fi router closer for the first day because the inverter kept dropping offline, but that turned out to be a weak signal, not a battery fault. After adding a mesh node, the system has been boringly reliable.
My favorite change is what happens after dinner. Before storage, the oven, heat-pump, and lights pushed us into the utility's peak window, when every kilowatt-hour felt overpriced. Now the battery starts discharging automatically around 4 p.m., usually carrying the house until bedtime. On sunny days, I finish with roughly 20 percent remaining, so I am not running it flat every night. That reserve has also made short outages almost unnoticeable; the lights flicker sometimes, but the router and refrigerator stay on.
Looking at my bills, the biggest saving is not the total annual number but the peak-hour reduction. My average monthly bill fell from about $185 to $112, though weather and rates obviously change. In summer, solar battery storage covers nearly all evening consumption, and I estimate about $60 of that difference comes from avoiding peak electricity rather than generating extra solar.
One small lesson came from searching battery forums. I typed “listen 280ah” while comparing LiFePO4 cells and discovered many listings use confusing wording around capacity and battery packs. I now check usable kWh, warranty, inverter compatibility, and cycle rating instead of trusting a catchy search term. For anyone considering home storage, size the battery around evening load, not array.
