I installed a 10kWh lion lifepo4 battery in my garage last spring, paired with a 6.6kW rooftop solar system. The decision was less about chasing independence and more about stopping my evening electricity bill from getting ridiculous.
Setup was surprisingly ordinary. My installer mounted the battery on a concrete wall, ran conduit to the hybrid inverter, and configured it to charge from solar first. I chose a time-of-use schedule that holds roughly 20% reserve, then discharges between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. That small reserve matters because we occasionally lose power during summer storms, and I still want the fridge and internet running.
Before storage, my household used about 28kWh daily. Solar covered most daytime demand, but I bought expensive grid power every evening. My first full month with the battery dropped the utility bill from $186 to $112, despite similar weather and usage. The following month was $97. I am not pretending the battery erased the bill—winter clouds and fixed connection charges remain—but the peak-hour savings are obvious.
What surprised me most is how quiet the routine feels. I check the app over breakfast, see the state of charge around 70%, and rarely think about it again. One evening the battery stopped discharging at 6:30 p.m. The app showed a communication warning, while the inverter displayed normal. I power-cycled the battery gateway, waited five minutes, and restarted it. The system resumed after sunset. It turned out my router had briefly dropped the network connection, not a battery fault.
Since then I added a small UPS for the router and enabled alerts. This was a minor annoyance, but it taught me that solar battery storage is still home technology, not magic.
After seven months, my capacity reading is 98%, and I have noticed no meaningful performance drop. Dishwasher and heater run on stored solar, not grid.
