Solution Solar Inverter
I installed my home battery storage system last spring after watching evening electricity rates eat into the savings from my rooftop solar. I chose a 10kWh lithium battery built around lifeypo4 zellen, mainly because the quoted cycle life and usable capacity seemed practical for our household.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The electrician mounted the battery in the garage beside the inverter, added a new energy meter, and programmed it to charge from solar during the day and discharge after 4pm. The only nuisance was getting the monitoring app to connect to our Wi-Fi. It kept showing “offline” even though the battery was working. I eventually moved a small mesh router closer to the garage, and the readings became reliable. That little fix saved me from an unnecessary service visit.
The biggest difference shows up during peak hours. Before storage, I tried to avoid cooking, laundry, or running the heat-pump water heater after dinner. Now the battery handles most of that load. On sunny days, it reaches 100% by mid-afternoon, then carries our refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and cooking through the evening. On cloudy days, I keep the dishwasher off and let the battery reserve about 20% for overnight essentials.
My utility bill has fallen from roughly $180 a month to $105 on average, although weather and seasonal rates make the numbers move around. I estimate the battery alone saves about $45–$60 monthly by avoiding grid power during expensive hours. It also feels good having backup power during short outages; the switchover is quick enough that my router stays online.
My advice is to size storage for evening use; dependable scheduling has mattered more than maximum battery capacity for me.
