I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. The change was less dramatic during sunny daytime than I expected. My rooftop solar panels fill the battery by mid-afternoon, and the battery carries the house through dinner, laundry, and the first few hours after sunset. Before storage, those hours were exactly when our utility charged its highest rate. Now the battery discharges automatically from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m., unless the forecast suggests saving some energy for a cloudy morning.
On my latest bill, our usage in the peak period fell from roughly 260 kWh to 78 kWh. The total bill dropped by about 38 percent, even though our household routine did not change. That number matters more to me than a glossy efficiency claim, because it reflects cooking and showers at the same times we normally use them. I also noticed the inverter stays quieter than I expected; I mostly hear a soft fan when the battery is charging hard.
My only real hiccup happened in July. The battery stopped discharging one evening, and the monitoring app showed a communication warning. I checked the obvious things first: the breaker was on, the cables looked secure, and the inverter still had grid power. After restarting the gateway, the warning disappeared, but I watched it for two days before trusting the automatic transfer again. That small incident convinced me that battery monitoring is not optional, especially when nobody is home.
I keep the state of charge between 20 and 90 percent rather than chasing every last watt-hour. It feels gentler on the cells, and leaves room for a sudden outage.
