I installed a 10-kWh LiFePO4 solar battery last spring, because our evening electricity use was eating into the savings from our rooftop panels. During the day, our PV system charges the battery, and after dinner it carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and occasionally the washing machine.
Before storage, our utility plan charged nearly 30¢ per kWh from 4–9 p.m. We used roughly 8–10 kWh in that window, especially when cooking and running the heat pump. Now I set the battery to discharge from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., then recharge from solar the next day. My monthly bill fell from around $180 to $95–$115, depending on weather. The roughly $65–$85 monthly reduction feels very real, especially in winter.
The most reassuring part has been watching the energy flow in the app. On sunny days, the battery reaches 100% by early afternoon; on cloudy days, I preserve a 20% reserve for outages. We had one outage during a storm, and the backup switched on so quickly that only the microwave clock reset. That was when I stopped thinking of the battery as an expensive gadget and started viewing it as household insurance.
I did have one minor setup annoyance. The installer had enabled a conservative 50% backup reserve, so I was leaving useful capacity unused every night. After confirming my outage priorities, I changed it to 20%. I would not recommend changing settings blindly, since battery warranty terms and local electrical rules matter.
For anyone comparing solar storage, I would focus on usable capacity, round-trip efficiency, warranty support, and whether the inverter integrates cleanly. Also, I have to laugh at the search phrase “lifepo4 will prowse,” which somehow appeared while I was researching LiFePO4 batteries. The system is less confusing: it quietly charges, shifts my peak usage, and saves money every month.
