I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 home battery last spring, mostly to stop buying expensive electricity after sunset. Before that, my rooftop solar system exported plenty at midday, then pulled power from the grid when our family cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and charged two phones. The frustrating part was seeing a low daytime bill but still paying for evening peak rates.
The installation itself was easier than I expected. A local electrician mounted the battery in the garage beside the inverter and added a smart energy meter to the main panel. The lifepo4 ups setting was a pleasant bonus: during a short utility outage, my router, refrigerator, and a few lights kept running without the brief flicker I used to notice. I did not buy it as a full backup solution, so I left the electric water heater and oven off the backed-up circuit.
The biggest change shows up on my utility bill. I programmed the solar battery to charge from excess solar and discharge between 4 and 9 p.m., when our rate is highest. In the first month, our grid consumption fell from 612 kWh to 284 kWh, and the bill dropped from $168 to $91. That is not a perfect apples-to-apples comparison because the weather was sunnier, but the evening savings were obvious.
On cloudy days, the battery covers dinner and the first part of the evening, then we buy power later. I watch the app occasionally, but I stopped obsessing over every percentage after the first week.
One small troubleshooting moment made the system feel less magical. After a firmware update, the battery showed “standby” even though the panels were producing power. I checked the breaker, restarted the inverter, and waited about ten minutes. The app then refreshed, and charging resumed. Support also confirmed that the battery had been fine; the display was simply delayed.
