group 31 lithium battery

Running my solar battery after sunset has changed the way I think about electricity. I installed a group 31 lithium battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to avoid buying expensive grid power during our utility’s evening peak. The setup was less complicated than I expected, although lifting the battery onto its wall bracket definitely took two people.

On a sunny day, my rooftop solar panels usually fill the battery by mid-afternoon. Once the sun goes down, the system automatically switches the house to stored energy. I run the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and occasionally the washing machine without noticing any change. Before storage, our biggest electricity use happened between 5 and 9 p.m. Now the battery covers most of that period, and my monthly bill has dropped by roughly $45 to $70, depending on weather and how much heating we use.

The most useful feature has been the battery’s reserve setting. I keep 25 percent in reserve for outages, rather than draining it completely every night. We had a short storm-related outage in January, and the transfer was quick enough that my router stayed online. That alone made the solar-plus-storage system feel worthwhile.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. One evening the battery stopped discharging at 18 percent, even though the app showed plenty of solar energy earlier. I found that a firmware update had changed the backup reserve to 40 percent. After lowering the setting, normal operation returned. I now check the monitoring app once a week instead of assuming everything is perfect.

So far, this lithium battery has been quiet, predictable, and much more useful than I expected. The savings are real, but the best part is using my own solar power at night instead of sending it cheaply to the grid for my household too.
